3rd Grade News
In science we will be wrapping up our animal adaptations unit with a test this week. Students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about all the different behavioral and physical adaptations through photos, video clips, books and experiments.
This week we wrote poems in celebration of Shel Silverstein for morning work. Students tried their hand at rhyming poems, visual poems, list poetry, and shape poems just to name a few.
We also had a guest poet, Anna Marie Close, teach a few lessons this past week. On Monday, she walked children through the process of writing blackout poems. The students quickly grasped onto this concept and came up with some amazing poems. You simply rip a page of text from a book and blackout word you don’t need, highlighting words to form a “found poem”.
On Friday, she returned to teach the third graders about imagistic poetry. Students picked one of four images and started writing descriptive words to describe the image or memories they may stir. Ms. Close will be returning next week to help us finish up these poems. Be sure to check out the hallway if you come by to see some of our amazing poems.
In math some of us are still working with fractions while others have moved onto geometry. Whether students are working with fractions or angles, we have noticed that all students have become rusty with their multiplication facts. Please make sure practicing facts becomes a part of your regular routine now and this summer. In fourth grade students will jump right in multi-digit multiplication and long division. Knowing these facts will make their first math experiences in fourth grade positive.
This past week we have been discussing how Jesus ascended to heaven and will come again in glory to judge the world by its love. The “Golden Rule” has also come up in a lot of classroom discussions and how we should treat others. We talked about how Jesus is the only one who can truly judge us because he knows our thoughts, actions and words.
