3rd Grade News
What an amazing job by all the students on Aspire! These third graders pulled through like champs on their first week of standardized testing. I know they were nervous and full of questions on the first day, but by Friday they were all as cool as cucumbers and acting like pros. I know this testing caused a lot of fears of the unknown, but hopefully they had an enjoyable experience and know what to expect in the upcoming years. It may be helpful to reiterate at home, if students are still bothered, that this test is just one type of assessment. We know they are smart because we watch them grow as learners everyday.
In science we have started to learn about physical and behavioral animal adaptations. We started off by learning the difference between the two and then worked in groups to identify some adaptations of specific animals from provided pictures. In the next lesson we learned about camouflage and then camouflaged some chameleons around our classrooms.
This week we began our poetry unit. We started off with word play and writing funny class poems. We have also been sharing poems within the classroom and reading the narrative poetry books Hate That Cat and Love That Dog by Sharon Creech.
In math we will continue to learn about fractions. We know this is a challenging topic. It would be helpful if you could point out examples of fractions and ways you use them in everyday life (cooking, dividing things equally among siblings, spending a fraction of money verses saving the other portion…)
This past week we have been discussing how Jesus rose from the dead. We discussed how his resurrection opens the gates of heaven to us and because Jesus conquered death, we too can look forward to eternal life in heaven. Another large discussion point has been spreading peace. “Christians are called to go out and bring Jesus’ peace to the ends of the earth.”
Please keep a close eye on the weather and dress your child appropriately for recess and P.E. classes. Students will be going outside everyday for recess and are expected to have appropriate clothing for the hot or cold temperatures. Students will also be having P.E. classes outside for the rest of the school year due to the construction.
So glad we will be back to a normal schedule next week, now if we can get some warmer weather!
