Over the past year, the SFX community rolled up its sleeves to meet capital campaign goals that signaled the start of construction on a new gym and educational facility. This project promises new and expanded spaces for parish and school learning, growth and community-building and will help St. Francis remain competitive with area schools in its ability to provide diversified curriculum, academic support and special services. Together, St. Francis school and parish families raised $7.7 million (or 90% of total campaign goal) in time for the old gym’s targeted demolition on March 24, 2018. We are grateful for the gifts from all members of our community that contributed to this success.
To help us reach our 90% funding goal, the threshold that was required to begin an on-time demolition and construction schedule, an anonymous SFX donor pledged a $500,000 matching gift. Over the course of several months leading up to March 1st, St. Francis families responded and made gifts to unlock the match. Campaign co-chairs provided weekly updates on matching campaign progress, and the Wilmette Fire Department joined us mid-way into this effort to reveal a financial update on an oversized thermometer displayed on the west school building.
On March 1st, Miss Barrett called an all-school assembly to officially announce the completion of matching challenge. This assembly was a great celebration of our students, the memories we have made in the gym and other campus spaces, and the bright future in store for us at 9th and Linden. Our Crusader mascot invited students of all ages to share reflections and color our thermometer. Several of our longest tenured teachers and SFX alumnae filled in the final section of the thermometer to the great applause of the student body.
During the course of the matching challenge, campaign co-chairs collected quotes from donors speaking to why they gave. Donors to the matching challenge included alumni, current parish and school parents, grandparents, and even SFX students. These contributions invited us to reflect on the power of giving, its enduring impact on our culture, and the importance of modeling stewardship. Our matching donor shared: It’s not about us in the now… but instead about our gift’s power in the future to encourage the next generation at SFX to reflect on the sacrifice and generosity of so many before them to pull this off. We hope that in 100 years this community continues to invest in our future at 9th & Linden, and that they tell the story of how we, today, made this happen.
This summer, progress is evident! The exterior walls of our new structure are up and campus is buzzing with construction activity as we head toward our targeted completion date of December 2018. SFX continues to raise funds to close the gap on the final 10% of this campaign. We enthusiastically invite all members of the SFX family to join us in making a gift that will close out the Faith in Action campaign. To learn more, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
