2nd grade had a blast at the Heller Nature Center this week! Our first field trip was a great success, as we explored the forest habitats of so many different living things!
This week, we learned about the seven different sacraments that help bring us closer to God and his church. We learned more about Baptism and that we receive it to wash away the Original Sin of Adam and Eve. We continue to pray and share in God’s love each and every day.
In math, we continue to work on place value and number sense concepts. We continue reinforce skills and concepts for how to show numbers in expanded form by adding the values of each digit in each place. We continue to work on reading and writing numbers up to 1,000 using standard form, word form and base-10 models as well. Finally, we worked on problem solving skills by solving place value riddles to uncover the mystery numbers.
We will continue working place value concepts next week.
Please encourage your child to practice their addition and subtraction math facts at home. We recommend using flashcards, online games or XtraMath.
In reading, we finished reading Flat Stanley and sent him on his way around the world! We also discussed the difference between genres of Fiction and Non-fiction to identify various types of books.
We continue to discuss how we ‘grow like beanstalks’ as readers in second grade! This week, we learned how to give a book a “sneak peak” by actively thinking and making predictions while previewing a book. We also continue to practice deciding “HOW” to read a book by deciding what the character voices should sound like. We also continue to practice the “5-finger rule” to help us find books that are ‘just right’ books for each reader working at an individual pace.
Please remember the importance of reading at home! Your child should read for at least 15-20 minutes every night!
In writing, we finished our Flat Stanley letters and mailed him on his way to all different places around the world! Our whole class Stanley is also on his way to Haiti with a copy of the book for our friends in Galette Chambon. We are very excited to hear back from the students in Haiti and learn about their adventures with Stanley!
*Flat Stanley will be making a trip home with your child one night throughout this unit! Each night a different child will get to take Stanley and his Adventure Journal home. Please read through the directions in the journal with your child when it is his/her night and help him/her complete the writing assignment along with it. Pictures can be printed or drawn in the journal. Please remember to return Stanley and all his things the very next day to school to help us stay on schedule!
Word Study (Spelling)
Next week, we will begin our first week of formal spelling lists! We will begin with a whole group list to reinforce the “Word Wall Words” in our classroom. Each night a different homework assignment will be assigned as a way for your child to practice a little each day. We will begin our differentiated word study lists in small groups the following week. Please look out for information in your child’s Sidekick binder regarding homework and spelling tests.
Science/ Social Studies
We wrapped up our research on habitats! We had a great time exploring the habitats at the Heller Nature Center as a fun way to end our first Science unit. Next week, each habitat group will present their habitat murals to the class, as they put on their ‘teacher hats’. Our next unit in Social Studies will be on types of Communities, followed by our Government unit.
