Happy Valentine’s Day! Second grade had a blast celebrating and passing out Valentines this week!
In religion, we began to prepare for Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season as we practice for the upcoming liturgy that both second grade classes will be leading. Please mark your calendars and join us for mass on February 26th at 10 am. We will continue to prepare for mass and learn about Lent over the next couple weeks.
In math, we continued to learn about and practice subtraction skills with and without regrouping. We practiced using the base 10 blocks to show how we ‘regroup’ 1 Ten for 10 Ones and 10 Tens for 1 Hundred in order to subtract. We will continue to work on our subtraction skills and move into larger multi-digit numbers with and without regrouping over the next few weeks.
Please encourage your child to practice their addition and subtraction math facts at home. We recommend using flashcards, online games or XtraMath.
In reading, we continue to learn about non-fiction texts and skills to help us navigate through informational texts. Our second graders continue to learn how text features help us to make sense of the information in non-fiction books. We also practiced adding ‘jot dot’ sticky notes to tell what the author is trying to teach us in different section of non-fiction texts, as well as, asking questions about things we are still wondering about the different topics. We will continue to work on our non-fiction skills over the next few weeks!
Please remember the importance of reading at home! Your child should read for at least 20 minutes every night!
In writing, we continue to learn about non-fiction writing skills. We began writing about our dinosaurs and began to collect facts about our non-fiction topics. We will continue working through the writing process on our non-fiction pieces over the next couple weeks.
Our 2nd graders did a great job learning their word patterns this week! Next week, we will have a whole group list on dinosaur-related words to help us navigate through our science unit.
*Homework Reminders: A copy of the spelling words and pattern will be sent home on the first day of each week, along with a Speller’s Choice homework packet. Each night your child is expected to choose one way to practice their spelling words to complete this packet by the end of the week. Please initial each box your child completes to show what they have done. Speller’s Choice packets are due on Friday each week.
Science/ Social Studies
In Science, we began our next unit on dinosaurs! This week, we learned about what it means to be bipedal (walks on 2 legs) versus quadrupedal (walks on 4 legs). We also learned about the time periods in which the dinosaurs lived in including the, Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. We also assigned individual dinosaurs and began our dinosaur research in class. We will continue to research our dinosaurs over the next week. Please see the email that was sent out this week regarding details for the next steps to our dinosaur project.
*Reminder: Dinosaur Exhibit will be on Monday, March 9th @ 2 pm in the Atrium!
