We had a fantastic and successful first full 5-day week of second grade! We continue to work on reinforcing and practicing our routines and expected behaviors. Please continue to discuss and reinforce these expectations at home with your child.
This week, we learned about God’s gift to all of us and the love he has for us all. We also had our first weekly religion lesson with Fr. Rodlin this week! The second graders enjoyed asking and answering questions about our upcoming sacraments this school year with Fr. We look forward to his weekly visits each Thursday.
In math, we continue to work on place value and number sense concepts. We worked on reading and writing numbers up to 1,000. Our second graders practices using base ten blocks, standard form and word form to represent numbers. We will continue to review these concepts over the next couple weeks before diving deeper into our place value unit.
Please encourage your child to practice their addition and subtraction math facts at home. We recommend using flashcards, online games or XtraMath (Please see letters that were sent home this week if you have not yet set this up at home).
In reading, we continue to discuss how we ‘grow like beanstalks’ as readers in second grade! This week, we practice deciding “HOW” to read a book by deciding what the character voices should sound like. We also learned about the “5-finger rule”, which helps us find books that are ‘just right’ books for each individual reader. Please ask your child to show you this rule and practice it at home to find ‘just right’ books to read together.
Next week, we will discuss picture walks and continue to reinforce ‘good reader’ habits.
Please remember the importance of reading at home! Your child should read for at least 15-20 minutes every night!
In writing, we worked on our letter writing skills. We also worked on interviewing our new friends to build an informative paragraph to describe all we have learned about them! We will continue to work on this project next week, as well as, continue to dive into small moment narrative writing.
Word Study (Spelling)
In spelling this year, we will be implementing a program called Words Their Way to help students identify and practice various patterns within words. We will keep you updated on when we will begin sending home formal spelling lists and assignments.
Science/ Social Studies
This week, we continued to learn about habitats and the features that make up each of the unique places in our world that house so much wildlife.
We will continue to learn about various habitats and the types of animals, plants and climates that exist in each habitat. Next week, will begin using research books to search for information and create murals for the different habitats over the next couple week. The habitats we are learning about include: oceans, wetlands, grasslands, deserts, arctic, and forests.
