We hope everyone had a great first two weeks of third grade! We wanted to touch base and give you all a little heads up about what to expect this year.
First, we send a weekly blog out on Fridays (or the last day of each week). Blog posts will review highlights from the week and will give you a peek into the upcoming week. We will also remind you of any important dates and/or information. You can also follow us on Twitter @CrusaderGrade3.
Getting To Know You
We enjoyed meeting all of our new students and getting to know a little about each and everyone one of them through the “All About Me” bags. Throughout the past two weeks we have also engaged in many other fun and exciting activities. All third graders played BINGO, while some classes participated in a hula hoop game or a “Cup Challenge.”
Last week your child received their new “sidekick” binder! This binder should travel between school and home EVERY DAY. This critical tool will help your child build organizational skills, while also helping us communicate efficiently between home and school each night. This is an exciting new responsibility for our third graders! Please help your child check his/her Home & Communication folder in the sidekick binder every single night to check for important notes and homework assignments. We are also asking that parents sign their child’s planner every night, after checking that homework is complete and placed in the black folder. Please remember to empty the “Family & Teacher Papers” pocket each night.
In third grade we enjoy a snack every morning. Please send your child with a healthy, nut free, mess free, snack daily. Some good ideas include goldfish, a bag of pretzels, an apple, or cut up fruit.
We began our first unit, God Calls Us to Faith. Children began learning that they are called to be God’s holy people. We will also discuss that God has blessed us each with gifts and talents that are meant to be shared with one another. Through these talents and His story, we will find our true happiness and satisfaction.
Students began spelling instruction this past week. The first day of every week, students will be given a pre-test of 10-20 words. The test will cover select words from a 3rd Grade High Frequency Word List. If a student is able to correctly spell all words on the pre-test they will be exempt from the spelling test on the last day of the week. If a student misspells one or more words, they will have a chance to retake the test at the end of the week to earn a perfect score. These words will then be placed on our word wall and students will be expected to use and spell them correctly.
This year in reading we will be talking about building a reading life and helping students find a LOVE for reading. Over the next few weeks we will be taking time to get to know your child as a reader. Students will also have reading homework every night. Homework will always be to read for 20 or more minutes and to complete some type of reading log. Students may also have an assignment from their small group that could include reading aloud, comprehension questions, or reading a part of a specific book.
Next week we will jump into Chapter 1 of math, Numbers to 10,000. Students will be assigned math homework every night. All math homework is expected to be completed nightly and returned the next school day. Homework is usually a reflection of the topic covered in class or a review of past skills. Students should be able to complete homework on their own or with very little assistance.
This past week we dove into a mini unit about citizenship within our community. As a class we broke down the pledge and its meaning. We also talked about what it means to be a good citizen within our classroom, the school, Wilmette, and the surrounding towns. This unit also included a lot of discussions about respect. We are hopeful that this unit will inspire our Crusaders to be respectful leaders within our school this school year.
