3rd Grade Blog, October 11th, 2019
On Monday the Wilmette Fire Department came out and had a Fire Safety assembly with our 3rd graders. We discussed the importance of having a plan and a meeting spot in case of an emergency. The fire fighters suggested actually setting off the smoke detectors in your home so that your children know what they sound like and sent a reminder to check all batteries! Mrs. Zavattero had a chance to put on all the gear during the demonstration!
All Saint Checklist were due to your child’s homeroom teacher yesterday, so all students should have a Saint picked out of whom they will dress up as and research. This upcoming week students should be completing research that will be due in class on Friday, October 18th. As you and your child fill out the outline, please make sure the language is child appropriate and that they understand what information they are using. We also want students to document all the resources they use on the last page. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us!
Have you ever wondered what makes up a seed? Ask your third grader! This week during science we dissected lima bean seeds and found out how a small dormant seed can grow into a reproducing plant! We learned all about the seed coat, stored food and embryos.
The Build-A-Plant Projects are fantastic! It is amazing how creative these kiddos are! Although the creativity is a fun part of the project it is also amazing how much they learned. Listening to the class share their projects really showed off some newly learned vocabulary and understanding of the plant life cycle. Next we will build on that knowledge and start learning about habitats, food chains, adaptations, and traits.
In math we are finishing up addition (math facts, adding numbers up to 10,000 with and without regrouping, and real world problems). We know a lot of students struggled with the bar models and this is something that will repeat through this year as well as this program. Bar models will be reviewed in the classroom as a pictorial model to help solve real world problems. Within the next week or so we are moving onto subtraction. Chapter 3 will cover the same basic skills, but with subtraction.
