Thank you for completing all the Saint outlines at home, your time and energy is greatly appreciated! Now the project is in the hands of your child. In class we will take the information and write a brief report. We will send a copy of the report home by Tuesday, October 29th for your child to practice before the Wax Museum on Friday, November 1st. The last thing we need from home is a costume. Please make sure all costumes are sent into school no later than Friday, October 25th.
Religion Extra Credit
As we near our unit on Saints we have an extra credit opportunity for your third grade student. We are challenging our students to find a church in the United States with the same name as their Saint. We are asking for the name of the church, the name of the parish, the location of the church, the church or parish website, and the distance of the church from St. Francis Xavier. A paper with all the details was sent home this past week.
Elmwood Beach Field Trip
In math we are moving to chapter 3, subtracting within 10,000. This chapter will be a close repeat to chapter 2, but with subtraction. We will cover mental math strategies, fact fluency, subtraction with and without regrouping as well as real world problems that use the bar models to solve. Some challenges that third graders usually have with this chapter is forgetting to actually cross out numbers when regrouping, subtracting through zeros and completing multi-step word problems. The best thing so can do at home is continuing to work on memorizing subtraction facts for speed and accuracy. If a student knows his/her facts they don’t have to stop and think about that little step when solving these multi-step problems.
Fun Math Fact Practice
There are a lot of math fact games you can find for free on the internet. Simply type “math fact practice game” into your search engine and a ton will pop up. Students often enjoy games from Math Playground, ABCya, and a favorite is Learn-With-Math-Games.com the Disco Dino!
On Friday we did an art gallery walked and showed off all of our projects to our classmates. We have some truly creative students! If was so nice to hear all the ohs, ahs, and compliments!
Next up is science, habitats! We will be taking a closer look at habitats, the adaptations that plants and animals have to survive in these habitats and the food chains/food webs they are apart of.
Storybook Pumpkin Patch
Please use this LINK to learn about the pumpkin patch that is popping up in the library. Such a fun opportunity for some family fun!
All Souls Day
All Souls Day is on Saturday, November 2nd. On November 1st, the third grade class will have a prayer service for All Souls Day. All Souls Day, also known as El Dia de los Muertos, is a day to honor and remember friends and family members who have died. If you would like us to remember specific friends and family members, please take some time over the next two weeks to write down names on a piece of paper and bring it into school. You may use familiar names (example: Uncle Bill) or formal names (example: William Welsh).
Students should be wearing a SFX fleece or sweater in the classroom if they are cold. It may be a good idea to keep one of these items in their locker for days they are cold in the building. Also, students should have on a vest for Mass days and wear gym shoes daily.
