It was great to see everyone at conferences. It’s nice to be able to talk about your child’s growth as well as share all the fun stories. Please remember, if anything else comes up, please feel free to email either one of us.
Next Wednesday, March 13, we are hosting both Islamic Foundation School and Solomon Schechter Day School here at SFX. On this day, groups will be presenting their skits that they have been working on during our meetings. Students are invited to come to school dressed for their skit. If a students does not have a particular item to wear for their skit, they may dress in their group color.
On this day our 3rd graders will be enjoying a pizza lunch provided by Poetry Pals, so no need to bring or purchase a hot lunch.
As always, all are welcome! If you would like to come help “chaperone” our kids, come help serve lunch, or just come see what Poetry Pals is all about, please feel free to stop in! Our guest will be with us from 9:45 – 1:00. Lunch will be served around 12:30.
Field Trip Reminder
Please remember to have your child turn in their permission slip and money for the Wagner Farm and Grove trip no later than Thursday, March 14th. Unfortunately we can only take ONE chaperone from each class (due to space limits at The Grove) and the lucky winners have been contacted. We hope to see many of you at Poetry Pals next week or on our walking tour of Wilmette in the spring!
Mardi Gras Celebration
3rd grade kicked off the Lenten season with a BANG! On Tuesday we made masks, enjoyed a king cake, and even got beads! Congratulations to Audrey Carlton and Teddy Cagney for finding the baby and becoming our class QUEEN and KING! The baby symbolizes luck and prosperity to whoever finds it in his/her slice of cake. Tradition also states that that person is also responsible for purchasing next year’s cake!
On Ash Wednesday we settled down and focused more on our Lenten goals. Here are a few goals from our very wise 3rd graders…
*I will try not to argue or fight with my siblings.
*I am giving up chocolate.
*I am going to pray every day before bed.
*I am going to pray more each day.
*I am going to help out at a soup kitchen.
Stations of the Cross Project
On Tuesday your child will come home with a project for religion class. Each child will be assigned a station of the cross that they will need to represent in a diorama. After creating the diorama they should write a paragraph describing what what is happening in their assigned station. We are asking students to complete this project in a shoe box (or similar sized box) and to use items found around the house. Get creative…a clothespin can be Jesus, toothpicks can make a cross, an old shirt can be cut down for cloth, and/or a pipe cleaner can be a crown of thorns. Your child will come home with instructions as well as a rubric that you can use to help guide your creativity. These projects will be due in class on Friday, April 5th.
This week students learned about taxes, supply and demand, as well as imports and exports. The kids did not like the idea of taxes at all, especially when talking about income taxes, but definitely understood the need for them. They soon came to understand why we pay them when we talked about street lights, snow removal, police and firefighters. On Thursday we did a lesson on supply and demand. Students discussed how the principles of supply and demand affect their life…through cupcakes! On Friday we did an interesting activity that opened the eyes of many kids when they learned from where different items are imported from.
