This week during EPIC Math we played Division Zoo with Mrs. Pritchard. In this game each child was assigned an animal. Mrs. Pritchard would call out how many of each animal could be in a cage and the students had to divide themselves evenly into groups. This was a fun activity in which we got a quick introduction to remainders.
Due to the rain on Wednesday we had another indoor recess. This week we played games with Mrs. Cummings. Students played Titanic, Conseeki, and Elephant, Jello & Palm Tree. Yes, indoor recess stinks, but the games and time with friends make it bearable.
We have continued with economics in social studies this week by learning about capital resources. We read The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas and the discussed the different resources the wolves and pig used. We also completed a sort of the three resources and took a quiz. It looks like the kids really get this economics thing!
We had the chance to meet Lowey Bundy Sichol this Thursday and her talked tied in perfectly to our current social studies unit! She writes “the world’s only business and entrepreneurship biographies for kids! Young readers finally have a book series that is fun to read and introduces them to topics of business and entrepreneurship.” What perfect timing!
Students will have their chapter 10 math test on Friday, March 1st. A review assignment will come home on Thursday to help students prepare. There are several division problems on this test. The best thing you can do to help your child prepare before Thursday is study facts. Students have learned that multiplication and division create fact families and they can use these to help solve problems. They have also learned several other strategies including arrays, repeated subtraction, and drawing pictures. Encourage your child to use these strategies when they feel “stuck” on the test.
