The 3rd grade Crusaders had yet another amazing experience with Poetry Pals on Wednesday at the Islamic Foundation School. Many students commented on how different, but weirdly similar our faith, and practices are like our Muslim friends from IFS. As teachers it is so cool to watch the kids have these “ah-ha” moments as they grow and learn. Some things they learned/observed is that they also use a string of beads like our Rosary to pray as well as have common figures like Abraham, Noah, and Jesus in their holy book stories. The big thing many of our students brought back is how both religions preach kindness to our fellow man through small acts and charity.
Our next Poetry Pals day happens here at SFX when we welcome our Jewish and Muslim friends to our school on Wednesday, March 13th. On this day our 3rd grade students will give tours of our holy space to our guest, we will all meet with Father for a short talk and Q&A session, as well as share a pizza lunch. It is sure to be a fun day!
We had such a wonderful time on Thursday exchanging valentines and spending time with friends. Our “party” was very laid back and the kids LOVED it! We simply exchanged cards, enjoyed a snack, and spent time with the ones we loved. The kids also had an opportunity to guess how many candies were in the mason jars. We were amazed at what great estimators we have in third grade.
This week we made our goods and service collages in class. Students were challenged to find and label four goods and four services in newspapers and/or magazines. We also learned about natural & human resources through some classic literature books.
This week we began understanding what is an opinion piece of writing as well as generating possible ideas. Students need to find a topic that they are passionate about and will have evidence to support. We began looking for topics in things they consider their favorites. Next week we will think about things they want . Hopefully from these two brainstorm sessions we will find a topic on which they are willing to take a stand.
We started division on Thursday, really hitting home the facts that division is simply sharing a number of items in EQUAL groups. We also helped students understand how they can use repeated subtraction to solve a division problem. Remember that students should still be reviewing math facts (+,-,x,/) for both speed and accuracy.
Ms. Schnecke’s math group – please see the note attached to your child’s test which went home on Friday. 🙂
We all have days where we forget something at home! Just a reminder that SFX school policy is to only call home when a student has a medical need or does not have a lunch. We will not call home for forgotten homework, shoes, gloves, etc. Thank you for your understanding and support as we encourage our students to take responsibility for their items!
