We are starting Chapter 3: Fractions and Mixed Numbers. In this chapter we will cover: equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering fractions, adding and subtracting like fractions, mixed numbers, improper fractions, renaming improper fractions and mixed numbers, adding and subtracting mixed numbers, multiplying fractions and whole numbers, and real-world problems with fractions.
Students should still be practicing basic facts for multiplication AND division. I will be assigning 10 minutes of fact practice at home every night this week. If your student needs flashcards, he or she may borrow a set from the classroom. It is imperative that students master these basic facts to ensure success with future math topics.
We are busy in Literacy. We continue our read aloud, “Front Desk” as we work to build reading comprehension strategies together with a deep focus on the characters in the story. In writing, we continue this focus as we work to write narratives with believable characters and scenes that “show”, instead of summarize, what is happening. We are also meeting in our guided reading small groups, and students are working in their Words My Way workbooks.
We continue our exploration of the Southeast in Ch. 7. We are learning about many important events and people that have shaped the region, including the Cherokee Native Americans. This upcoming week, we will be learning about the first European settlers in this region. The students have a coordinating packet to work on throughout each chapter, and they will use this as a study guide for the test. Please make sure your child is keeping this packet and any other coordinating review sheets in their social studies folder in their “sidekick.”
This past week, we have wrapped up Ch. 4 and took our Unit 1 test. This upcoming week, we will move into Ch. 5, titled, “We Are Called to Follow Jesus.” We will be learning about how Jesus’ words and actions taught us how to live holy and happy lives, and how baptized Christians try to live like him and follow his teachings. We will also study the Lord’s Prayer. We will discuss how, in saying this prayer, we praise God, ask for all our needs, ask to be forgiven and to forgive others, and ask to be saved from evil.
- Please be sure to check and empty your child’s Black “Home” Folder in his or her sidekick on Friday afternoons, as this is when I typically will send home corrected assignments.
- Cold weather=warm coats, hats, gloves, boots, and snow pants. Dig them out! Students are not permitted to play in the snow without the proper snow gear.
