We have started Chapter 4: Decimals. So far we have explored tenths and hundredths place values and how those relate to fractions. This week we will be comparing and ordering decimals; using place values of tenths and hundredths, and rounding decimals. We continue to practice Basic Facts in multiplication and now division. Keep those flash cards handy, and keep practicing!
From this point on, we will have a weekly spelling test on identified Fourth Grade High Frequency Words. Students will be given the list on Mondays, and must complete two spelling activities of their choice from a weekly choice board. All spelling work will be due on Fridays, and we will take our spelling test on Fridays. In Grammar, we have been focussing on understanding action verbs, linking verbs, and helping verbs. This week we will learn about verb tenses and work with singular/plural verbs. We will continue to take a short weekly grammar quiz on Fridays. In reading and writing, students have been introduced to our next unit topic: reading nonfiction. We will be looking at where nonfiction writing appears in our daily lives, how we can make personal connections to just about any topic, and how writers organize nonfictional texts to help readers understand new topics. Students are also being individually benchmark tested in reading through this week.
*At this time, students should be reading and logging 30 minutes of reading every week night*
We are wrapping up our Solar System Unit in science this week. It’s been a wonderful learning experience with lots of hands on learning. Ask your child what is rotation and what is revolution (those are tricky). Who doesn’t love space?!? The fourth graders are really looking forward to our field trip to the Adler Planetarium on Wednesday. Thank you to our adult chaperones and to all families for supporting this learning extension. We will have a Unit Review on Thursday, and a Unit Test on Friday.
If you haven’t heard, we are serving at Mass this week. Please join us if you are able. We are also finishing Unit 2 by talking about the role our conscience plays in making good decisions. We know that many times we fall short, but we may come before God through the Sacrament of Reconciliation to ask for God’s forgiveness. We must keep trying to live as Jesus lived and to love and Jesus loved. The students have also been very prayerful about current world events. As always, I encourage students to talk about tough topics at home with their families.
Enjoy the snow, and remind your student to dress for outdoor recess and activities.
