This week, we will continue working through Chapter 2: Multiplication and Division. We will also cover: Factors and Multiples.
Students have been working hard to solve multiplication and division problems by using the area model strategy and the standard algorithm strategy, as required by the Illinois Learning Standards. This takes practice! I have been carefully checking students’ work, and I have been requiring students to “redo” missed problems. This does take time and effort, but I feel it is important to solidify the understanding of these important mathematical procedures. Students should expect math homework to take about 20-25 minutes.
Students are making great progress with basic fact fluency. I can tell they’ve been practicing. Keep a set of flashcards in the car, on the sofa, in their study spot, and in the bathroom! It is imperative that students are speedy quick and accurate with basic multiplication and division facts.
Our class will continue reading “Front Desk” as a read aloud. The main character, Mia, has some amazing character traits! The relationships and situations in this book give us great opportunities for “snapshot” understandings. Students have been hard at work in their writing journals creating lists of character traits, snapshot illustrations, and brief retell. Please, ask your student about this book. Also, we will be starting class reading group instruction this week. Our grammar topic this week will be colons and semi colons.
This past week we learned that we serve God by praying, helping, and making sacrifices for others. Our class talked about specific ways we can do these things in our everyday lives. We can help a neighbor carry in groceries, we can pray for our families every night, and we can help someone on the opposing team during our soccer game. We are understanding that angels are definitely among us, and sometimes God uses us to be those angels to others. Your children are kind, generous of heart, and spirit, and very willing to help and serve others.
**Please, be sure your student is dressed for cooler temperatures. Find those coats, hats, and gloves!
