We continue our Chapter 3 Topic of working with fractions. We have learned about mixed numbers, improper fractions, equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, adding, and subtracting fractions. This week, we will move into multiplying fractions and working with real world problems using fractions.
We will have a Chapter Review on 12/16, 12/17, & 12/18. Our Chapter Test will be on Thursday, 12/19.
Please continue to practice multiplication and division basic fact fluency. Students should be able to recall basic facts quickly and with a high rate of accuracy. This important 4th grade skill makes all other topics so much easier.
Students have been busy reading and writing fictional stories. They are very proud of their finished stories. We’ve continued to meet in our small groups to read some humorous books. We all really enjoy our small group reading time together. This coming week, we will begin to change our reading focus to nonfiction and informational texts. Students will be working with different reading strategies and will have the opportunity to learn more about topics of their choice.
***Please remind your student to Log their 20 minutes of nightly reading. The reading logs are checked in at random. Students can only receive credit for reading if they have recorded it. ***
In grammar, we are spending some time focussing on sentence basics. We are looking at subjects and predicates, clauses, and prepositional phrases. In addition to completing a weekly topic packet, students are also practicing writing better sentences as part of weekly grammar work. Students also complete a weekly word study using Words Their Way workbooks.
We have paused Social Studies for now, and we are focussing on our first Science topic: The Solar System. Last week, we learned about the characteristics of the inner planets of our Solar System. This week we will be learning about the characteristics of the outer planets of our Solar System. Students have really enjoyed the hands on learning activities we have been doing in Science.
In Religion, we have been talking about the season of Advent. Last week, we prayed together and focussed on the word HOPE. We know we are waiting patiently, hoping for the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus. Everyday our Advent Calendar guides us to practice a task such as waiting patiently in line or being helpful to a friend. During the second week of Advent, we will focus on the word PEACE.
It is a very exciting time of year for children. Take time and enjoy their wonder and happiness during this season!
