The Metric Olympics was a two day event inviting 6th grade students to work with their lab teams on six Metric Olympic activities. Opening day began with the pledge of allegiance and, of course, the Olympic theme song! The students primarily worked together measuring length and mass of various objects and distances. Events included:
1. The cotton ball shot put
2. The paper straw javelin
3. The paper plate discus throw
4. The longest step
5. Largest handful of paper clips
6. The measuring mass race
Sixth grade students were completely engaged and responsible for measurements for each of their team members. They needed to know which base unit applied, which prefix was used, if any, and they were held to high standards with precise measurement best practices. Our award ceremony was held today during science classes. All three classes did an outstanding job!
