We’ve had a fun week learning about community helpers!
Important Dates and Reminders
Monday October 14th: No School, Columbus Day
For JK parents who want to use the morning drop off line, we have organized a group of 8th grade girls to walk JK students all to their classrooms each morning. We hope that this plan will be helpful to any student who is overwhelmed by the walk in on his/her own.
Please send your child to school with a jacket or sweatshirt each day. We will head outside to play every day unless it is raining. Please label all clothing items with your child’s name!
Theme of the Week and Activities
At our Craft Center, we made stained glass leaves in beautiful Fall colors. At our Literacy Center, we worked on our October self-portraits. September self-portraits will be sent home next week. At our Math Center, we counted on the abacus. We are practicing counting the beads one at a time, from left to right. At our Sensory Center, we worked with thera-putty. We also rolled out many cookies with playdough. At our Dramatic Play Center, we opened up a doctor’s office in our classroom! At our Writing Center, we are strengthening our crayon grip by practicing to draw straight and curvy lines in our workbooks.
In Religion, we read the bible story “Jesus’ Special Friends.” We learned about the friends of Jesus, called apostles who left their own work to follow Jesus. They helped Jesus tell others about God’s love. We talked about how we are also friends of Jesus.
We read stories about the many different people in our community who work hard to help us and to keep us safe. Some of our favorites were “Construction Workers Help,” by Tami Deedrick and “Firefighters,” by Jacqueline Laks Gorman. We also loved “ABC Dream” by Kim Krans.
Social Emotional Learning
We’ve had many discussions this week about words we can use to work things out with friends when disagreements arise. We are learning to talk and to listen to each other. Often, we are too quick to tell on each other and this makes everyone feel bad. Teachers are always close by and ready to help this process along.
We ran, skipped, hopped and played ball on the field. We love climbing and sliding down the slides on the Tot Lot. We had a blast playing freeze dance and singing in Music.
