This has been a fun week finishing our Pumpkin unit! The children have become experts on how pumpkins grow and their many uses! Just in time to turn all those pumpkins into Jack-O-Lanterns!!!
Important Dates and Reminders
Thursday October 31st: HALLOWEEN! JK will have a fun day of marching in the school parade@ 10AM, having a special snack, and doing a fun craft! Please send your child to school in costume and if they stay for enrichment a change of clothes for the rest of the day!
Holidays are a fun and exciting time for the children. We try to provide fun activities but still work to keep the day calm and enjoyable for all! Please note: JK will do a shortened version of the school’s Halloween parade. We will walk one block, heading from Linden down 9th to Greenleaf, and taking 8th street to Linden and back to school. Please plan to be in that viewing area and ready to cheer us on!
Please remember we have a group of 8th grade girls who can walk JK students to class every morning, if you want to use the drop off line. Sometimes walking to class can be overwhelming to the children and we hope this plan is helpful!
As the season is changing please remember to send children with the appropriate attire. We really want the children to enjoy outside play unless it is raining. Don’t forget to label all clothing items!
Theme of the Week and Activities
Craft Center: We made Mummies! (check out our spooky hall and door decorations)
Literacy Center: We read so many great pumpkin books this week! A few favorites were “10 Orange Pumpkins” and “16 Runaway Pumpkins.” We were also so lucky to have another mystery reader… Avery’s mom! We love seeing the class meet all of you and enjoy your fantastic book choices!
Math Center: We worked on counting. The children used pumpkins and spiders to count, pattern, and play math games with!
Sensory Center: We used thera putty and playdough to strengthen our fine motor muscles.
We put on safety goggles and used real hammers to pound golf tees into pumpkins. We loved this pumpkin pounding activity!
Dramatic Center: We had JK restaurant . It has been a joy watching the children work together to cook, serve, and eat together!
Writing Center: Using a big line, little lone, little line, little line we learned the Letter “E”. The class continues to strengthen their hands and fingers and are doing great work in their workbooks!
In Religion, we read a story about how God has made each of us unique and special. We all look different and sound different and God loves us all. We talked about how we can celebrate our differences while showing respect to one another.
Social Emotional: We worked this week on empathy and how we can help others feel with our words and actions. This week we also began a new incentive program. Using what we have learned about empathy we came up with the “Do your part to fill our heart”. Each day there is an empty heart on the board. As a class we talked about what each of our responsibilities is to have a productive and fun class. Each day we work together to fill our heart, with the end goal being a dance party!! It has been working so great and we are so proud of each of the children doing their part! We plan to bust a move Friday!
Gross Motor: We continue to enjoy the field and tot lot for running, jumping, and playing!
