A Week in Review:
Reading Workshop: This past week our readers focused on finding patterns, and pattern-breaks, in their books. We are enjoying reading through more and more books because of our increased stamina for reading independently. We have also increased our partner-reading stamina since the new year! During partner reading time, we practice echo reading, choral reading, and turn-taking (AKA – seesaw) reading. Because our reading curriculum allows our students to spend the majority of workshop time READING, our students develop a deep and meaningful relationship with books and all that they can bring into our lives.
Writing Workshop: We continue to write true stories throughout writing workshop. Last week we focused on revising our work. We “fixed up” our writing by listening for and recording vowel sounds, using the word wall to correctly spell sight words, and attending to leaving enough space between our words. Writing workshop is a fan favorite throughout our kindergarten classrooms!
Math: This past week, we worked through the concepts of 1 more and 1 less which will act as a natural segue into addition and subtraction practice in the coming months. This coming week, we will dive into the exploration of flat and solid shapes.
Science: Over the past few weeks, we have turned into avid weather watchers. We are enjoying exploring seasons, storms, and the weather patterns that go along with the various regions of the world. We’ve learned that there are 4 important aspects to consider when observing and reporting the weather: Precipitation, temperature, cloud coverage and wind speed. We are enjoying reading about various weather patterns and representing those patterns through many art mediums!
Other News:
Miss Lavelle’s Kindergarten Class: On Friday, your child brought home the special part they will have in our class mass on Tuesday, February 4th. Please take some time at home to review these parts, especially those with speaking sections. We hope many of you can join us for our 10AM mass next week!
100th Day of School Celebration: On Wednesday, February 5th our kindergarten students will be 100 days stronger and smarter than they were back in August! To commemorate this exciting day, we invite all kindergarten students to dress down in clothes that might depict what they will look like when they turn 100 years old. Our day will be filled with cross-disciplinary learning activities that highlight the many ways we can work with the number 100. Please email your classroom teacher with any questions about this fun day!
