A Week in Review:
Reading Workshop – In reading workshop, our students will learn a reading strategy and put it to practice through private and partner reading each day. This past week, our readers walked through the school and our classrooms “looking, thinking, reading and learning” about their world at SFX! Our readers are working hard to use the same “look, think, read, learn” strategy while reading through many rich and beautiful non-fiction texts.
Writing Workshop – In writing workshop, our students work each day to add pictures, letters, words, labels and sentences to their writing journals and papers. Our writers have learned that they are the boss of their writing, not the teachers, principal, or even parents! They are working on developing the independence, confidence and stamina to write pieces that they care a lot about!
Math – In math, our students will work each day to explore math concepts using concrete, pictorial and abstract tools to master all things numbers, shapes, patterns, counting and measuring. This week we worked to explore the many math tools we will use throughout the year. Our first math chapter will focus in on mastering the understanding of numbers 0-5.
Religion – Each morning, we begin our day with prayer circle. Here, students and teachers are invited to share prayers aloud. This week we heard many prayers for moms and dads, goldfish and birthdays! We will take a tour of the church this coming week, and will soon begin attending school mass with our fellow schoolmates.
Executive Functioning – Our students are working hard to follow multi-step directions related to arrival and dismissal routines. These routines revolve around backpacks, hand washing, folders and much more. It is wonderful seeing their independence blossom!
Other News:
Toys at School – We ask that all toys, stuffed animals, playing cards etc. are left at home (with the exception of Show and Tell or Child of the Week). We have noticed that many toys coming to school are leading to distractions/disagreements in the classroom. Thank you for your cooperation on this issue!
Child of the Week – Information explaining Child of the Week will be sent home in your child’s black folder this week.
Room Parents – If you’ve signed up to be a room parent, please let us know by sending us a quick email!
Daily Snack – As a reminder, we ask that you send a snack, packed outside of your child’s lunchbox, to school each day. Our lunch is held from 10:50-11:30, so we will have snack time in the afternoon.
Photo Sharing – We will begin posting photos in blogs and on Twitter once we’ve received the media release forms from our administrative team. Thank you for your patience with this!
