Weekly Update 1/7-1/11
Last week we welcomed all of our friends and teachers back to school after a joyful winter break and had a busy first week of 2019! We have been sharing stories of our adventures over the holidays and favorite gifts received. We’ve heard about fun times in Arizona, Florida, and New York, and neat presents like bicycles, barbies, baseball bats, backpacks, new lunch boxes, remote control cars, and so many more!! We are becoming more and more comfortable speaking and sharing stories or items in front of the class. We’re also practicing answering and asking questions that begin with “who, what, where, or when.” The classroom’s favorite question by far during show-and-tell has been “Where did you get it from?!”
We continue to practice tracing, we are working on recognizing simple patterns, and have introduced rhyming words. The classroom also has a new screw board work for strengthening hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. We have also been putting together an alphabet floor puzzle, then using a pointer and rehearsing the ABC’s.
We were able to see (and go play in!!!) the new gym and we met the SFX Crusader mascot who gave us high-fives! We ran, kicked soccer balls, passed them, rolled them, and shot some hoops! In class we changed our kitchen space into a preschool Vet Clinic filled with dogs, cats, a rabbit, etc. We have been busy caring for the animals, walking the dogs, brushing the cats, taking temperatures, administering shots and more!
This month one of our topics of focus is on Arctic Animals. We introduced a penguin object matching work with a variety of penguin species. We also have other small objects representing animals of Antarctica and their matching picture cards. We have explored polar bears, foxes, hares, walruses, whales, seals, caribou, and more! We’ll be discussing the habitats for both polar bears and penguins, how water turns to ice, and the differences between winter and fall seasons.
In Library we heard the book Pizza and listened to an original felt story created by Mrs. dos Santos about a lost dog trying to be a community helper ( ie. service dog, firehouse dog, police dog) but eventually finding a good home helping at a pizzeria! She also read us The Magic Toolbox and we sang “Old McDonald Had A Farm EIEIO” but changed the words to “Old McDonald Had A Workshop” and switched out animals for tools such as a hammer, a saw, a screwdriver, etc.
In Music class with Mrs. Chada we sang “This Little Light of Mine” in preparation for our February Mass, and we learned the Hokey Pokey!
In Spanish we learned how to sing “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” (Cabeza, Hombros, Rodillas, y Pies).
Finally, the 3’s want to extend a BIG congratulations to Reid and his family!! Reid became a big brother and helped welcome his beautiful baby sister Elin on Tuesday, January 8th. SFX is so happy for you, as well as excited and incredibly lucky to be able to share in these wonderful times!
