A number of St. Francis Xavier School alumni continue to serve our community as SFX teachers. One of these special faculty members is Brigid Oberlin, SFX Class of 2005. We sat down with Brigid on the last day of school this year to learn more about her years at 9th & Linden:
What are a few of your favorite memories from your time as a student at St. Francis?
As a student Field day was always one of my favorite days of the school year. Another one of my favorite memories was the 8th Grade vs. Teacher volleyball game during the Pep Rally. Last, but not least, one of my all time favorite memories was May Crowning in 8th Grade because I was chosen to crown Mary.
What does SFX do particularly well?
I think SFX does a great job of preparing students for high school. I was very well prepared for all of the homework and time management that was needed to succeed in high school.
How has St. Francis changed since you were a student here? How has it stayed the same?
Well, one huge change is the new construction. It is so nice to be a part of the new addition to the school; it has helped so much to have more space for the students. Also, the technology in the classrooms is amazing. I remember the days when it was just chalkboards and overhead projectors. Now we have Smartboards, Elmos, Chromebooks and iPads for the teachers and students to use. There have always been some great traditions that have stayed the same, such as Special Persons Day, 8th Grade Play, Homecoming Pep Rally, the Brian Avery Award and much more! I love that we have maintained many of the traditions from when I was a student at SFX.
What do you like most about teaching here?
There are lots of things to love about teaching at SFX. I feel at home here and I love this community. It has always been my dream to work at a school like this. I am so fortunate to be a part of such a loving place.
Are any of our current teachers ones that taught you when you were a student?
There are a few teachers and staff members that still remain on campus: Father Sheridan, Mrs. Zeman, Mrs. O’Keefe, Mrs. McDonough, Mr. Van, Derek, Mrs. Kaup and Miss Barrett. They are amazing people to work with. Also, I do love when some of the other teachers come back to substitute or just say hello like Mrs. Sullivan, Mrs. Anne and Mrs. Drekoff.
How has the new building changed our campus?
The new building has made a huge difference in our capacity to meet students’ needs. I love the new gym, library and makerspace. I really enjoy being able to teach technology classes in the makerspace because we are able to create some amazing projects. It’s a wonderful place to expose students to new technology and inspire their creativity.
What’s it like working with your mom?
Oh, I absolutely love working with my mom! I love that I get to come to work with my best friend. She makes working at SFX so much fun…I hope she doesn’t retire anytime soon because it wouldn’t be the same without her!
Anything else you’d like to share?
Just a big thank you to all of the alumni, parents, past families and grandparents who have donated to the school and to the capital campaign. We wouldn’t have such an amazing place without their generosity and support. Please come visit our campus and check out all the new and old spaces!
